Keeping Important Files Safe With These Essential Tips

Nowadays, a huge percentage of important information can be found in computers and online. And by no means is this information secure. Many people covet crucial information, and can invent ways to run away with such information and use it for criminal purposes. Here are some essential tips for keeping important files safe:

Permission protocols

Permission protocols ensure that not just anyone has access to files. Newer versions of Microsoft Windows has a Permissions option, which can be found when a user accesses the Sharing tab in files or folders.

Passwords

Never underestimate the importance of passwords. Passwords and permission protocols are probably the most basic forms of cyber-security, and they can stop almost everyone who isn’t a hacker dead in their tracks. People should always keep in mind that a password should be one that even their closest friends and relative won’t be able to guess. Passwords should also be updated every 90 days.

Encryption

It’s a good thing that EFS or Encrypting File System programs have been released on several platforms to protect files. As such, people are highly recommended to learn how to use the program, and use it as often as they can. It should be noted, however, that if a particular file, even though encrypted via EFS, is sent through a network, it can be stolen and the data can be read. Third-party encryption programs are helpful in this situation.
